Proximity is an innovative project where we, together with Strijbos & van Rijswijk, have developed an instrument that allows artists to compose not only in time but also in space. Designed for live performance, this instrument enables artists to position sounds within a spatial environment. Effects can also be applied to these sounds and individually positioned in space, delivering audiences (and the artist!) an immersive sound experience.
The instrument operates using Max MSP for recording, looping, spatialization, and sound effects. The artist can control these functions via MIDI controllers, together with an iPad running TouchOSC, which provides an intuitive and flexible interface for live manipulation.
Proximity was developed in collaboration with Maarten van Damme, bassist of Raccoon. Through continuous experimentation and the integration of his feedback, we have created a strong prototype.
Our debut performance was on December 5, 2024, at the Toonzaal in Den Bosch, featuring musician David Chalmin performing his own compositions alongside collaborations with Bryce Dessner. While we envision Proximity thriving in expansive landscapes, this venerated venue provided an excellent opportunity to test the prototype in a controlled setting.
To fully unlock Proximity’s potential, further research is essential. This includes refining the concept and exploring its application in larger, open environments where the spatial dynamics can be experienced on an even grander scale.
